What is Multilayer PCB?

Multilayer PCBs, or printed circuit boards, are the most complex type of board used in electronics manufacturing today. These boards consist of multiple layers of conductive material, typically copper, sandwiched between non-conductive fibreglass or other insulating materials.

The multiple layers allow additional components and connections to be placed on the board, including circuit components with increased complexity, such as microprocessors and amplifiers. Additionally, multilayer PCBs can often perform better than single-layer boards due to increased heat dissipation and a more significant number of metal layers that can reduce noise.

When the number of components and connections increases, so does the cost. However, the additional cost of multilayer PCBs is offset by improved performance, increased functionality, and space savings. This makes them popular for high-end electronics such as medical devices, military equipment, automotive systems, and smartphones.

Multi-Layer PCB Manufacturing Process:

The production of a multi-layer PCB begins with Pre Production Engineering (PPE) to review all customer requirements and specifications before the manufacturing process starts. After issuing the necessary materials, such as copper-clad board laminates, core material, solder mask and silk screen, the inner layer is etched using a chemical etching process which removes unwanted copper from the board’s surface.

This is followed by automated optical inspection (AOI) to scan the inner layer of the PCB for defects or flaws, lamination to pressurize and heat the copper-clad board laminate into a single board, drilling holes and vias to plate with copper to provide electrical connections between all layers of the PCB, panel plating to create the ground plane and provide electrical shielding.

Then, the outer layer is printed with a silkscreen or dry film photo tool for component placement. Pattern plates are applied to protect the surface of the board and provide insulation between components, and the outer layer etching process is done.

Following this, unused via holes are plugged, a solder mask is applied to protect the components and provide insulation between them, and a protective surface finish is added to resist corrosion. The board’s profile is checked for any irregularities or misalignments in the layers before Electrical Test (ET) is performed on the PCB to ensure all components function correctly.

Once this process is completed, the PCB is visually inspected for any defects or flaws before being securely packaged to protect it from damage during shipping and storage. This entire process is carefully monitored and controlled to ensure that only the highest quality product reaches the customer.

Benefits of Multi-Layer PCB:

Multi-layer PCBs offer many advantages compared to other PCB boards. Some of the benefits are:-

  • Improved thermal dissipation: With the increased number of layers, multi-layer PCBs offer better thermal dissipation, which helps to reduce overheating and increase performance.
  • Increased circuit density: The higher layer count gives the board a smaller form factor while accommodating more components. This increases the availability of space for routing traces and allows for greater flexibility in design.
  • Improved reliability: Multi-layer PCBs are more reliable than single and double-layer boards due to the increased number of layers which provide greater insulation and protection from external electrical interference.
  • Enhanced signal integrity: With improved design flexibility, multi-layer PCBs can be optimized for better signal transmission resulting in reduced crosstalk and improved signal integrity.
  • Better space utilization: Multi-layer PCBs offer improved component protection due to the increased number of layers. By utilizing the available space more effectively, complex designs can be implemented without compromising on performance.
